A hypodermic needle, one of a category of medical tools which enter the skin, called sharps, is a very thin, hollow tube with one sharp tip. It is commonly used with a syringe, a hand-operated device with a plunger, to inject substances into the body or extract fluids from the body.

  • Do not stick your fingers inside the sharps container. When placing the needle in the sharps container, hold the needle and the tubing together. Sharps containers should be placed at eye level and easily accessible. If a needle protrudes from the container, do not attempt to shove it in with your hands.
